SALSIFY

Salsify (tragopogon porrifolius) is a vegetable whose root and leaves can be used for cooking purposes. It is also known as white salsify, goatsbeard, vegetable oyster, and the oyster plant. The latter two names reflect the root's taste, which when cooked, resembles an oyster. Salsify is a member of the sunflower family and its varieties are named French Blue Flowered and the Mammoth Sandwich Island. It is cultivated in Central and Southern Europe, the United States, and in Asia (Taiwan), and is said to have originated in the Mediterranean. Its root is similar in appearance to a thin parsnip. Additionally, it is long in length and is cream or white in color. From the top of the salsify, green, grass-like shoots emerge. These leaves are edible and can be used in salads, for example. Salsify is a hearty plant that requires approximately 150 days to grow. However, it can be left in the ground during the winter months and will still flourish. When cultivated for a few years, salsify will also produce stalks that bear purple flowers.

Chaffinch

The Chaffinch is undoubtedly one of the most widespread and familiar birds, occupying most woodland, parkland, farmland and urban habitats across Britain & Ireland. It is this use of many habitats, coupled with its varied diet, that has made the Chaffinch such a successful species.

Description:

The plumage of the Chaffinch is unmistakable and this species is extremely unlikely to be confused with any other species, except possibly Brambling. During winter, the male Chaffinch has a red-buff head and nape, a buff-chestnut back, olive-green rump and pink-red cheeks, throat and chest. The belly is a creamy-white. Towards the end of the winter, the tips of the feather become worn away, revealing the stronger tones of the breeding plumage lurking below. As a result of this abrasion the slate-blue crown and nape become exposed, as does the chestnut back. In flight, the two white wing bars can be seen.

Female Chaffinches and immatures are less strikingly coloured, with an overall drab brown-grey-green appearance to the back and head and a buff off-white belly and chest. Again the two white wings bars can be seen in flight. Chaffinches are about the size of a House Sparrow but have a thinner more elongated shape, with a longer tail. There are a number of calls made either in flight or when perched, notably a strong, clear ‘pink’, but it is the song that is most characteristic and no doubt familiar to Garden BirdWatchers across Britain. The song is loud and bright in presentation, characteristic (though with regional dialects) and repeated often from a prominent perch.

Ibis is the common name

for various wading birds

having long, curved bills

which also includes the spoonbill. Ibis are found in most of the warmer areas of

In 1967, while training for the 1968 Mexico City Games, he suffered two injuries and was forced to spend three months in the hospital. When he realized he could not possibly win the next Olympic marathon because of his weakened condition, Tsuburaya ended his own life by cutting his right carotid artery with a razor blade. Of 'Mouse' and Men

The mouse was invented in the 1960s by Douglas Englebart. He said that he called it a mouse because it looks like one. It's small, gray, and has a tail. The mouse has since caught on as the most popular way to point at different things on a computer screen. In order to do this, it has to take your movement and turn it into electricity, which is the only thing a computer can process.

The ball on the underside of the mouse keeps track of how much you've moved it by touching two rollers, one that measures how much you move it up and down, and one that measures motion left and right.

The two rollers are connected to special wheels that are lined with holes, allowing light to shine through. They spin next to detectors which send electrical pulses to the computer at the rate in which the light passes through the holes. More pulses mean more motion, and the computer moves the arrow on the screen accordingly.

The other important part of the mouse is the button. You need to be able to tell the computer when you're finished moving. The button is a simple electrical switch. When you push it down, you let electricity through and send a signal down the wire into the computer.

That's how mice take your movements and turn them into electricity for the computer to process. A trackball works in pretty much the same way. The ball rotates rollers that rotates wheels that make electrical pulses that a computer can decode into movement. The buttons just aren't on the part that moves, so you can click without accidentally pushing the arrow off what you're pointing at.

What made this feat notable was that Oscar was 60 years old at the time. But that's not all. Four years later in Stockholm, Oscar captured a gold in the running-deer team event, making him the oldest ever Olympic gold medalist at age 64. But that's not all. The Modern Olympic Games

It was a young French nobleman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who began a campaign to revive the Olympic Games. He was anxious to bring back the high standards of sportmanship that the Games had shown during their greatest period. He believed that taking part in sporthelped to strengthen the mind as well as the body.

France supported Coubertin's idea from the start. Other countries also backed him. At a meeting held in 1894, it was decided to revive the Olympic Games 2 years later. Fittingly, the modern Olympics began at Athens, the capital of Greece. They were to be held every 4 years at a different city.

CAPSHAW, Ala. - The goat was arrested, the Mercedes-Benz was assaulted and the dog came along for the ride.

It happened Sunday when a woman driving the Mercedes saw a goat and dog playing on U.S. 72 in northern Alabama, Sheriff Mike Blakely said.

She stopped, afraid they would get hit, Blakely said. But the goat jumped on the car and wouldn't come down. Fearing scratches and dents in her import's paint job, she called the Limestone County Sheriff's Department. A deputy got the goat down and put it in his patrol car, but then the dog jumped into his back seat too.

The deputy took the dog to a veterinarian and the goat to the home of another deputy.

"If anybody is missing a goat and dog, they need to let us know," Blakely said.

Most people think bats are blind, perhaps because many fly at night. All bats, whether they fly during the the night or day, have excellent eyesight.

How do night-flying bats find their way in the dark. They send out high-pitched cries which echo off objects (echo location). The sooner the echo returns to the bat, the closer the object is to the bat. In this way, the bat knows how to avoid crashing into things.

Beyond the sweep of the tide, where the plant life of the sea ends, the land's plant life begins, often at the foot of a tall cliff. There, among jumbled rocks, constantly washed by spray, grows samphire.

It has roots that anchor the plant in cracks in the rocks. Samphire has fleshy, bluish-green stems, and clusters of tiny, whitish flowers.

Golden samphire is quite different plant. But it still has the same kind of thick, fleshy, very narrow leaves. Like ordinary samphire, it grows, among spray-splashed rocks and also in the salt marshes along the coasts. Its tightly packed, golden flower-heads are 1 inch across, and gleam in the sunshine. Each flower is made up of many flowers in one.

Golden samphire is a long-stemmed plant that belongs to the daisy family.

Neuroscientists have long used damaged brains as a way to understand normal brain functions. But doing the opposite also works. A group of researchers at Harvard recently looked at the effects of aging on healthy people’s brains and found that as we get older, communication between different brain regions breaks down. This discovery could eventually help scientists better characterize and detect neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s, which affects more than 5 million Americans.

The younger brain, below, shows more synchronized activity than the older brain, above.

Until recently, most scientists looking at the aging brain focused on individual regions, especially those in the frontal lobe, which may shrink or lose activity even in the absence of disease, says Jessica Andrews-Hanna, a doctoral student in psychology at Harvard’s Center for Brain Science and the lead author on the group’s paper (published last December in the journal Neuron). Though other investigators had hypothesized that disconnections might occur in the ebb and flow of signals between regions, it wasn’t easy to measure this until the introduction in the early 1990s of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a scanning technique that measures blood flow.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Florida Governor Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency as several wildfires burned along the state’s central Atlantic coast on Monday.

Dry, windy weather fueled the fires. At least three homes have been destroyed and hundreds of residents of Daytona Beach have been ordered to leave the area.

The largest fire roared across 3,000 acres in Brevard County, where one home was destroyed and 60 others threatened, forestry officials said.

Tornadoes Cut Destructive Path Across Central U.S., Killing 22

SENECA, Missouri — Stunned survivors picked through the little that was left of their communities Sunday after tornadoes tore across the Plains and South, killing at least 22 people in three states and leaving behind a trail of destruction and stories of loss.

At least 15 people died in southwestern Missouri. In the fading mining town of Picher, Okla., at least six people were killed, and at least one person died in storms in Georgia.

Susan Roberts, 61, stared at the smashed remains of her classic 1985 Cadillac sitting on her living room floor — the only thing left of her Seneca home. A woman who had apparently sought shelter in the car died there, she said.
