The Waling-waling of Davao
Among the groups of flowering plants, the orchid family is the largest with about 940 species of which about 790 are endemic. The queen of Philippine orchids, Waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana Reichb. f.), was discovered in 1882 in Mindanao, its original home. Recognized as one of the most beautiful orchids in the world, it has the largest flowers among Philippine species.
Davao's year-round fair climate is conducive to the cultivation of orchids. The pride of Davao, the Waling-waling, is endemic to the region. Its mother plant was discovered by a German scientist upon the slopes of Mt. Apo.
Today, Waling-waling and other hybrids are propagated in many orchid farms scattered across the countryside. The most well known are Yuhico Orchids Gardens in Greenhills, Derling Worldwide Orchid Corporation in Dumoy and the Puentespina Orchids Garden.
